Plans are currently underway by the US military 101st Airborne Division to retake the Iraqi city of Mosul from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) . This new strategic information was given by US Defense Secretary Ash Carter while speaking Wednesday with troops from the 101st Airborne at their base in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
In a statement, the Defense Secretary stated that “there are big arrows pointing at both Mosul and Raqqa” strongholds for ISIS. He continued that this strategic approach is necessary because of the group's power across these areas.
Carter also stated that American commandos are already in Iraq with an objective to kill or arrest members of the terrorist group. Unlike the terrorist campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan which used a force of over 100,000 troops, the US military will be deploying a force of about 1800 troops to train Iraqi forces, flush out ISIS and retake affected areas. The Secretary will travel across Europe to garner more support from allies like the UK, Germany, Italy, France, Australia, and the Netherlands.
